The Chandler Limited RS124 Compressor is a recreation of one of the most coveted audio tube compressors of all time, the legendary EMI / Abbey Road RS124, adapted for use in the modern studio.
The RS124 Compressor was designed in 1960 by Abbey Road Head of Technical, Bill Livius, Assistant Manager Len Side and experienced EMI Audio Designer Mike Bachelor, the Abbey Road RS124 compressor is one of the most coveted pieces of hardware ever developed.
Born out of the Altec 436Bs compressors purchased by EMI in the late 1950s for Abbey Road Studios that they were not happy with.
The RS124 is the compressor most closely associated with recording with The Beatles at Abbey Road Studios where it was used extensively and left its mark on most of the group's catalogue. The RS124's soft character and ability to tame transients without closing down the sound was something that quickly became popular with the Abbey Road Studios engineers, and its use was extended to all parts of the productions, including tracking, bus compression, mixing and mastering. The RS124 Compressor was built for use exclusively at Abbey Road and was never commercially available, but for the first time ever it is now possible to get a genuine RS124 that fully captures the personality of the original hardware. The RS124 (Ser. 60070B, 60050A, and 61010B) is still in use in the famous studio to this day.
